World War I (World War One) was a huge war fought from 1914 until 1918. It was called the Great War while it was being fought. America entered the war in 1917. 32 countries fought in this war: the Allies (Great Britain, Russia, Japan, Serbia, USA, and others) battled the Central Powers (Germany, Bulgaria, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and others).

Almost 9 million people were killed during WWI, and 21 million were wounded. This was the first war in which airplanes were used.

The Allies won the war; it ended with an armistice (a truce) signed at 11 AM on Nov. 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month) and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in June, 1919.

This war resulted in many changes in European country boundaries, the end of the power of the monarchies in Europe and the formation of the League of Nations (an international peace-keeping organization that was disbanded after failing to prevent World War II).

Although World War I was called "The war to end all wars," it did not have that effect at all - there were many major wars to come.

Veteran's Day honors US war veterans. It began as a celebration of the peace after World War I ended, and was originally called Armistice Day; the armistice (peace treaty) ending WWI was signed on November 11, 1918. Armistice Day became an official federal holiday in 1938. The holiday was renamed Veteran's Day in 1954, and became an official holiday honoring all US veterans. Veteran's Day is observed on November 11 each year.
