The coloring page above is based on a mosaic of a dog on a leash - it is about 2,000 years old. The mosaic is from the floor of a house in Pompeii, Italy. The inscription "CAVE CANEM" adorns many of these ancient dog mosaics, which are located at the threshold of some houses; in Latin, this means "Beware of the dog."

The town of Pompeii was buried in lava when the nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted on AD August 24, 79.
